Merry Christmas – Take A Smile No. 12
Merry Christmas! We are delighted to announce that the graffiti abstract work from the Sponk series ‘Take a Smile’ has raised the impressive sum of
This year, I had the pleasure of organising and running three exciting graffiti workshops. These events were not only an opportunity for young people aged 14 to 18 to develop their artistic skills, but also a way to reconnect after a period of isolation during the Corona pandemic. The workshops were offered independently at various educational institutions in Gelsenkirchen from June to August 2023.
The first workshop started in June as part of the project week at the Evangelische Gesamtschule Gelsenkirchen. Over five days, the participants learnt the basics of graffiti art with great enthusiasm. From project planning to realisation with the spray can and the techniques required, Sponk’s workshop taught a wide range of skills. The works created were presented at a celebratory event and the young artists were then able to proudly take their artworks home with them. After completing all the works, Sponk took the participants on a day trip to the largest ‘Hall of Fame’, an open-air graffiti area in NRW where sprayers come together to work on large concept walls.
This was followed in July by the workshop for the St Christopherus church community in Herne, where the participants worked in an inspiring allotment garden environment. An artistically designed little house with nature motifs was created here, symbolising the connection to nature and the community. The participants not only learnt graffiti art techniques, but also felt the power of community and creating together.
The conclusion of the workshop series took place in August at Schalker Gymnasium. Here, Sponk worked together with the renowned artist Claudia Lüke, who initiated the workshop and took part herself out of her own interest in graffiti art. This workshop was not only an opportunity for creative fulfilment, but also for personal development. The works were subsequently exhibited in the school building.
These three workshops not only enhanced the participants’ technical skills, but also strengthened their creative expression and sense of community. At a time when many young people are struggling with the challenges of digitalisation, the workshops provided an opportunity to channel their energy in a positive way and express themselves in a creative environment.
I am proud to have been able to help guide these young people on their creative journey and give them the tools to express themselves artistically. The graffiti workshops were not only an opportunity to learn, but also a platform to develop talent and promote self-confidence. It was a pleasure to see the amazing progress of the participants and to experience how art has enriched and changed their world.
In the future, I hope to offer more workshops of this kind and give even more young people the opportunity to discover and develop their creative potential. The positive experiences and impressive artwork from these workshops will always remind me of the importance of creating space for creativity, self-expression and community.
