We are delighted to announce an extraordinary exhibition! From 13 August to 21 October 2023, we will be presenting the fascinating works of the renowned artist Sponk in the Kaue, now known as ‘Wohnzimmer Gelsenkirchen’. Admission is free and we cordially invite you to visit this unique vernissage.
Sponk, a talented artist, began his artistic journey with graffiti 18 years ago. Back then, he created his first masterpieces on the walls of the Hall of Fames, the favourite meeting places of the graffiti scene. But Sponk went even further and continuously refined his style over the years. His art moved from the walls to canvas and finally to wood, which he sawed out with great precision.
The creation of his works is a lengthy process that can take weeks or even months. Sponk pays great attention to every detail, no matter how small, and impresses with breathtaking colour combinations. His abstract depiction of letters, the use of contrasts and bright colours create fascinating optical illusions. It is almost as if the letters jump out of the canvas and come to life.
A milestone in Sponk’s artistic development was the introduction of his special masking technique in 2010. Initially frowned upon by the graffiti scene and seen as a breach of taboo, Sponk has established this technique and recognised it as a valuable tool. The word ‘Sponk’ recurs repeatedly in his works, paying homage to his roots in graffiti culture.
The exhibition also focuses on the change from graffiti as pure street art to an appreciated art form in living rooms and as a sought-after collector’s item and investment for art collectors. Sponk’s work has made a significant contribution to advancing the graffiti scene. Although he has continued to break away from the original conventions and explore new avenues and combinations, he remains an integral part of this vibrant culture.
The exhibition rooms in the Kaue provide the perfect setting to present Sponk’s captivating works. As the ‘living room of Gelsenkirchen’, this cultural venue is accessible to everyone. Every visitor is welcome to explore the exhibition and experience Sponk’s artistic journey.
